COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Development announced updated guidelines for the state’s TechCred program ahead of the next application round, which will open Oct. 1.

The updated framework strengthens the program’s focus on technology-driven skills and gives employers a targeted tool to invest in their workforce and prepare Ohioans for the jobs of today and tomorrow, a news release states.

“Ohio is experiencing tremendous economic growth, but that growth is only as strong as the workforce behind it,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. “Our businesses tell us again and again that they need more trained workers. TechCred is helping change that by giving employers the tools to invest in their people and ensuring Ohioans have the skills they need to have successful careers right here in the Buckeye State.”

Through TechCred, employers can identify the technology-driven skills their workforce needs and select credential programs from a new list of approved, industry-aligned options. After applications are reviewed and awards are issued, employers support their employees by covering the cost of completing an eligible credential. 

Employers can be reimbursed up to $1,000 per employee, per credential, with a maximum award of $30,000 per application period.

Employers applying for TechCred on behalf of their employees must select from an approved list of industry-recognized, technology-focused credentials.

Credential training must result in a certification and be completed in less than 12 months, or in programs that are fewer than 900 clock hours or 30 credit hours.

Eligible training providers are those that have been registered or accredited by one of the following organizations:

  • ApprenticeOhio.
  • Ohio community colleges.
  • Ohio nonprofit independent colleges and universities.
  • Ohio public universities or regional campuses.
  • Ohio state board of career colleges and schools.
  • Ohio technical centers.
