COLUMBUS, Ohio – Several organizations in the Mahoning Valley were awarded grants for projects, the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office announced Thursday.
In total, 14 organizations in the state were awarded $337,500 in grants through the Northwest Ordinance History Grant Program. Grant amounts ranged from $3,180 to $70,000.
“The Northwest Ordinance History Grant Program supports projects in Ohio that commemorate, interpret and celebrate the history, legacy and impact of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787,” said Diana Welling, State Historic Preservation Officer. “These projects are to be commended for increasing public understanding of this pivotal event in U.S. history and highlighting its connection to Ohio’s communities, culture and heritage.”
Here are the local projects that will receive grant funding:
- The Center Brook Historical Society in North Bloomfield was awarded $70,000 for the Center Brook Manor Underground Railroad Education Center.
- East Liverpool Community Partnership for Revitalization in East Liverpool was awarded $23,440 for the Point of Beginning Heritage Project and $4,900 for the Northwest Ordinance Lecture Series.
- Newton Falls was awarded $3,800 for the Braceville Community Foundation – Land, Freedom and Community initiative.
Eligible projects included public programs (lectures, interpretive events, heritage tourism initiatives); educational initiatives (curriculum development, teacher resources, student engagement); exhibits, signage and interpretive installations; publications (print or digital); oral history, documentation and community history projects; digital humanities projects (websites, apps, online storytelling); and brick-and-mortar preservation projects (properties must be listed on the National Register of Historic Places).
