WARREN, Ohio – The Warren Farmers Market will celebrate National Farmers Market Week on Aug. 5.
The celebration will include a cooking demonstration, free seed giveaway, live music, activities for children and free yoga. The first 20 customers will receive $15 in market tokens.
The Warren Farmers Market, which operates from 3-6 p.m. every Tuesday through September at 347 N. Park Ave., has been managed by Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership since 2013. It hosts several local farmers who sell a variety of products, including peaches, tomatoes, corn, peppers and local honey. This year, the market is working to address healthy food access by reaching new customers and supporting local farmers.
“At the Warren Farmers Market, we bridge the gap between local producers and our community by creating a vibrant gathering where fresh, locally grown food and handcrafted goods become more than products – they become connections,” said Sev Tripoulas, Warren Farmers Market manager.
The market accepts SNAP/EBT cards and matches SNAP purchases with the Produce Perks program, allowing residents to double their dollars to spend on fruits and vegetables. WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers are accepted, as well as the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
National Farmers Market Week, which runs from Aug. 3-9 this year, is an annual celebration of farmers markets proclaimed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition, a membership-based nonprofit organization that supports farmers markets nationwide through training, technical assistance and network-building.
“Across the country, farmers markets are defining their role in our communities,” said Willa Sheikh, executive director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “Markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve and are a place where market operators, farmers, shoppers and neighbors can collaborate to meet the evolving needs of their community. As we look to the future, farmers markets will play a key part, as they always have, in leading efforts to adapt, respond, innovate and advocate for our local food systems. National Farmers Market Week is a chance to celebrate all the ways farmers markets show up for us.”
