YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Phantom Fireworks CEO Bruce Zoldan says the fireworks industry is preparing for a major boost as the nation approaches its 250th Independence Day, a milestone he expects to be one of the sector’s largest celebrations on record.

Zoldan said planning for the semiquincentennial has been underway for years, with companies developing themed products and building inventory in advance. He also noted the holiday falling on a Saturday is expected to further increase demand.

Founded in 1977, Phantom Fireworks has grown into a national retailer with about 100 year-round stores and up to 2,000 seasonal locations. Zoldan said the company’s business remains heavily concentrated around July 4, which accounts for roughly 85% of annual sales.

He credited decades of industry safety reforms and regulatory efforts with expanding legal fireworks sales across most states. Zoldan also pointed to ongoing challenges, including tariffs and security concerns, as the company continues managing large-scale imports and nationwide distribution.

Looking ahead, he said Phantom’s long-term success will depend on its leadership team as it continues preparing for what he expects will be a landmark holiday season.
