The clowns in “Pagliacci” may not elicit many laughs, but they’re pretty good at outrage, shock and horror.
Mahoning Valley arts lovers can experience the gritty – and accessible – opera Saturday at Powers Auditorium, performed by Opera Western Reserve.
“Pagliacci” has been described as an opera that’s perfect for folks who might not have seen an opera but assume they won’t like the art form. It’s rife with infidelity, lust and murder – all wrapped behind a clown’s mask.
OWR’s version has a brisk running time of 90 minutes, which includes an intermission.
Tickets range from $37 to $87.
Other arts and entertainment highlights this weekend include:
“The Wizard of Oz”: Salem Community Theatre presents four performances of the musical based on this classic piece of Americana. Curtain times are 7 p.m. tonight through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available online and at the box office before each performance.
Taylor Borton: Nashville-based country singer Taylor Borton, who hails from Hubbard, will be part of a concert at Penguin City Brewing’s ballroom. The show will also include Bayou Blue, which pays tribute to Linda Ronstadt and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The show will start at 7 p.m.
Three Dog Night had a flurry of hits in the late 1960s and 1970s and is still on the road after all these years. It will make a stop at Orr Auditorium at Westminster College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets start at $45.
