Westminster College Hosts Pittsburgh Symphony Twice

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The inaugural season of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Westminster kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Westminster College’s Orr Auditorium.

The series, sponsored by Steelite International, begins with “Bernstein in Pittsburgh,” celebrating the 100th anniversary of composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth. Among the pieces performed will be those conducted by Bernstein when he lead the Pittsburgh Orchestra in the 1940s, including his “First Symphony” and compositions by Beethoven, Haydn and Stravinsky.

Conducting the symphony for the series will be Manfred Honeck. Featured in the Bernstein performance will be mezzo soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano.

The orchestra will return March 25 with violinist Julian Ranchlin with performances of Grieg’s “Peer Gynt,” which includes “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” and Mendelssohn’s violin concerto.
