BOARDMAN, Ohio – Three members of Toastmasters Executive Club 408 will compete in an area-level speech contest after placing in the club’s semiannual competition last month.
Steve Halas won the Humorous Speech Contest. Mike Moss took first place in the impromptu Table Topics Speech Contest, and Roy Thomas placed second.
Halas, Moss and Thomas will compete in the Area Level Speech Contests on Saturday at Warrenville Heights Library in Warrensville Heights, where they will compete against winners from nine other Toastmasters clubs. Queenie Oliver, who placed third in the Table Topics Speech Contest, will compete if one of the other contestants is unable to participate.
The winners of the area-level contest will advance to the division-level competition.
Halas said he was honored to represent Executive Club 408 in the Humorous Speech Contest.
“It was great to bring laughter to the audience and share stories of my precious family member,” he said, quoting Proverbs 17:22: “A merry heart doeth good like medicine.”
Moss said winning the Table Topics contest demonstrated how much he has grown since joining Toastmasters.
“I’ve become more comfortable speaking in front of people, thinking on my feet, more confident and trusting myself in the moment,” he said.
“Our group’s energy shines, and we each played an important role in making this happen,” said Angela Johnson, club president. “I’m proud of all of the contestants.”
