NORTH LIMA, Ohio – An event offers the next generation of skilled workers a hands-on look at manufacturing, engineering and the trades before reaching high school.
Ken Timmings discusses the Workforce Challenge event hosted by KTSDI, which brings sixth, seventh and eighth grade students together to explore careers in manufacturing, engineering, construction and other technical fields through hands-on activities and demonstrations.
Timmings says students rotate through 12 interactive stations featuring welding, woodworking, crane operations, powertrain systems, STEM activities and projects led by industry professionals, first responders and community partners. The goal is to expose young people to career opportunities that may not be visible in a traditional classroom setting and help build the future workforce.
The event serves as part of a summer STEM camp program and gives students direct exposure to local industries while allowing businesses to engage with potential future employees. Timmings says the challenge focuses on developing interest in technology, skilled trades and hands-on careers that remain critical to the nation’s economy.
Jim Antes says programs like the Workforce Challenge are important because manufacturers across the Mahoning Valley continue searching for skilled workers. He says introducing students to industrial careers at an early age helps them understand the opportunities available in local manufacturing and technical fields.
Antes adds that students learn about material handling, crane operations and the equipment used throughout modern manufacturing facilities, providing a practical look at careers that support the region’s industrial base. Both speakers say building workforce awareness early remains essential as employers across the Valley prepare for future hiring needs.
