YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown City School District on Monday announced the recipients of its 2025 Youngstown Honors Awards.

The annual celebration recognizes the dedication and commitment of the school district’s teachers and staff in supporting its students and advancing educational excellence. 

“Our educators and staff are the driving force behind the success of our scholars and the heart of our school district,” YCSD Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor said. “The Youngstown Honors event is an opportunity to spotlight their extraordinary efforts and recognize the positive impact they have on our entire community.”

This year’s event will honor educators, staff and volunteers across multiple categories for their contributions to student success and the YCSD community. They were nominated by colleagues, students, families and community members.

The 2026 award recipients are:

  • Dr. Wendy Webb Administrator of the Year: Robert Kearns, YCSD chief of staff.
  • Anthony DeNiro Distinguished Service Awards: Debra Caffey, YCSD human resource generalist; John Hopkinson, director of technology infrastructure, technology department; Zacha Medina, parent engagement coordinator, East Middle School; Wildemina Ocasio-Sanchez, educational assistant ELEA, East High School; John Randall, groundskeeper, maintenance shop; and Shaunda Yancey, instructional coach, Rayen Early College High School.
  • Edward “Ed” Matey Athletic Coach of the Year: LaVance Turnage, coach, East High School.
  • Deb DiFrancesco Co-Principal of the Year: Debra Campbell, principal, East High School; and Tricia Mulcahy, principal, Chaney High School.
  • Dr. Ben McGee Lifetime Achievement Award: Edna Douglas, dean, East Middle School.
  • Newcomer Award – Staff: Michael Rock, YCSD treasurer.
  • Newcomer Award – Teacher: Ryan Mitchell, teacher, Chaney Middle School.
  • Superintendent’s Volunteer Service Award: Kim Anderson, PBIS Tier 2 mentor, East Middle School.
  • Substitute Teacher of the Year Award: Michael Cotton, dance substitute teacher, Chaney High School.
  • Teacher of the Year Award: Marc Ellis, teacher, Volney Rogers Elementary School.

The award recipients will be celebrated during an event from 5-9 p.m. May 7 at the Maronite Center, 1555 S. Meridian Road. Tickets are $60 and must be purchased by April 3. Click HERE.
