YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. has been awarded a $483,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program, Produce Prescription Program. 

The award will provide three years of funding for the Glenwood Fresh Market in partnership with the Mercy Health Mahoning Valley Foundation.

“YNDC is honored to receive this grant award that will strengthen the evidence based approach the Glenwood Fresh Market provides to increase healthy eating and lifestyles of residents of the Mahoning Valley,” said Ian Beniston, YNDC executive director. “The fresh market has served more than 3,400 people since it began operation in 2022. We are grateful to the USDA and our project partners, including Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, Western Reserve Health Foundation and Swanston Charitable Fund for making this award possible.” 

The Glenwood Fresh Market provides year-round access to free fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy food items to residents of Mahoning County using a produce prescription model. The market also provides free health screenings, nutrition literacy courses, cooking demonstrations and other resources to members.
