Youngstown Country Club Increases Membership

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Membership at Youngstown Country Club increased by 30% over the past few years and could rise even more this year.

The club is completing a long-range strategic plan and will launch its 2024 membership incentives in the first quarter.

The YCC is the region’s premier member-owned, full-service country club. 

“The club has withstood the test of time,” said Scott Sundstrom, head golf pro at the Liberty Township property. “It has been through the wars, the Depression, the closing of the steel mills, and it still stands tall today.”

It plays an important role for the community by hosting numerous charitable golf outings throughout the year, Sundstrom said.

The YCC celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2023 with a “throwback” golf event and a gala dinner affair.

 The golf event was a four-person team tournament in which participants played the course according to its original routing.  The players also used hickory shafted clubs and persimmon woods. 

The Youngstown Country Club is one of the oldest in the country. It was founded in 1898 – 10 years after golf was introduced in the United States from Scotland.

Throughout its history, members have enjoyed and preserved the club’s many recreational facilities, which are not limited to golf. The club also offers swimming, tennis, paddle ball and skeet/trap shooting.

The YCC also has a clubhouse with a grandeur and amenities that few golf clubs can match.

The current golf course was built in 1911 by Walter J. Travis, then upgraded in 1924 by Donald Ross.

Over the years, the club has hosted the Ohio State Amateur Championship, the Women’s Ohio Amateur Championship, the Women’s U.S. Open Qualifier, the Men’s U.S. Open Mid-Am Qualifier, the Ohio State Senior Amateur, and the 1925 Western Open, which was considered a “major” for the tour players.
