YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace & Defense has launched a pilot program to help Ohio small businesses compete for National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I grants.
The three-month hybrid program, managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining in partnership with the Ohio Aerospace Institute, will guide a cohort of five to 10 companies through the process of developing an NSF Project Pitch and preparing a submission-ready Phase I proposal.
The program is designed for Ohio companies developing technical innovations with defined research and development objectives. It is not intended for projects focused on manufacturing, routine engineering or commercialization.
The first four weeks of the program will focus on developing or refining an NSF Project Pitch, including the technological innovation, technical challenges, market opportunity and company capabilities. Participants also will undergo a readiness assessment to determine whether they are prepared to move forward with a Phase I proposal.
During the final eight weeks, companies invited by NSF to submit a proposal, or those planning to resubmit following previous feedback, will receive assistance preparing a complete Phase I application. Support includes developing a technical work plan, preparing a budget, participating in a mock review panel and completing a final compliance review.
Participants also will receive one-on-one coaching, written feedback and proposal and budget assistance. The program combines virtual instruction with up to three in-person working sessions in Ohio.
Applications opened June 30 and will be accepted through July 20 on a rolling basis. Selected companies will be notified July 22, and the first required in-person session will take place July 29 in Youngstown.
