YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mayor Derrick McDowell announced the launch of the city’s 2026 Impact Initiative, a coordinated effort aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community.
McDowell emphasized that improving public safety requires a collective approach, calling on residents, community groups and local organizations to play an active role alongside police and partner agencies.
Following the mayor’s remarks, Gerard Slattery of the Youngstown Police Department outlined enforcement efforts tied to the initiative, noting that officers will increase patrols and traffic stops with a focus on identifying individuals involved in violent crimes.
Joel Smith of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the agency will deploy data-driven saturation patrols targeting areas with the highest levels of violent activity, particularly during the summer months.
William Cappabianca of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the importance of interagency cooperation, adding that the initiative aims to enhance safety and improve quality of life across Youngstown.
Officials said the effort represents a proactive, community-supported strategy to address violence and strengthen neighborhoods throughout the city.
