YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University Police Department has announced a four-legged addition to its force.

Barkley continues the police department’s K9 program after the retirement of the previous police dog, Gino, last May. Barkley, a 1-year-old German Shepherd from Holland, joins the department as an explosives and firearm detection dog.

In addition to his specialized training, Barkley underwent a comprehensive five-week training course at Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville, Pa, with Officer Hope Stoner, who recently assumed the role of YSU’s K9 handler.

“Barkley is excited to meet everyone, and together we’re committed to keeping YSU’s campus and the surrounding areas safe,” Stoner said.

Stoner joined the YSU Police Department two and a half years ago. Before becoming a police officer, she earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from YSU and completed the police academy in 2020. She is working toward a master’s degree in criminal justice.

“I’m excited to take on this new role with Barkley and contribute to the safety and well-being of our campus community,” Stoner said. “Working with Barkley allows me to continue learning while also making an impact on the safety of our students, staff and visitors.”

Barkley and Stoner’s new partnership will also involve training with local police departments and conducting explosive sweeps at schools and large public events, such as basketball games and other campus functions. Their presence at these events will provide an extra layer of protection, helping to ensure a safe and calm atmosphere for all involved.

“We are proud to welcome Barkley to our team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our campus,” said YSU police Chief Shawn Varso. “Officer Stoner’s dedication to her role as a K9 handler demonstrates the value of growth and development, and we are confident that she and Barkley will continue to enhance the safety and security of our university.”
