YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Shelly LaBerto, owner of the Tiffany Square Plaza Chick-fil-A in Boardman and a Youngstown State University aluma, has pledged $100,000 to the Kilcawley: Centered on the Future campaign.
Her contribution will support the ongoing revitalization and modernization of YSU’s Kilcawley Center, enhancing the student experience for future generations.
In recognition of LaBerto’s commitment to YSU, a student organization suite in Kilcawley Center will be named in her honor.
“When I was on campus in the late ’80s, Kilcawley was where I lived if I wasn’t in class – whether it was studying with friends in the Chestnut Room, Greek life or other activities,” LaBerto said. “It was such a big part of my life for those five years at YSU, and I’m proud to support its future.”
YSU President Bill Johnson said LaBerto’s gift is a testament to her deep connection to YSU and the community.
“Her support will play a vital role in transforming Kilcawley Center, ensuring that it continues to serve as a dynamic space for student engagement and development,” he said.
LaBerto began working at the Southern Park Mall Chick-Fill-A when she was 16. Her career with the company took her across the country. After earning a political science degree from YSU, with a minor in economics and a combined business focus, she was hired for an internship at the Chick-fil-A corporate headquarters.
LaBerto then returned to her roots in Boardman, where she became the general manager of a free-standing Chick-fil-A location in Boardman, and in 2023 she became the owner of the Tiffany Square Plaza Chick-fil-A location.
“I’ve never not been a part of the university,” LaBerto said. “I always donated, even if it was small. When I moved back home, I took an active role at YSU. I was on the alumni board for 11 years and served as president for two years.”
Scott Schulick, chairman of the Kilcawley: Centered on the Future Campaign, said LaBerto’s gift demonstrates her commitment to service above self.
“Her gift reflects her positive student experience and her desire to give back so tomorrow’s students have a similar experience, and should encourage other successful alumni to consider the same, ” he said. “Her investment will have a lasting impact on future generations, and we are honored to recognize her contribution through the naming of a student organization suite within Kilcawley Center.”
The Kilcawley: Centered on the Future Campaign is a comprehensive initiative designed to transform and modernize Kilcawley Center, which serves as the heart of student life at YSU. The renovation will provide flexible, collaborative spaces that promote innovation, creativity and community-building.
