YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University is launching an online Associate of Science degree in health information management beginning this fall.

Offered through the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, the program is designed to meet the rising demand for skilled professionals in health information technology, a field projected to grow by 8% through 2029, according to national labor data. 

Health information management professionals play a behind-the-scenes yet essential role in ensuring accurate, secure and timely health care data – key to quality patient care and efficient operations.

With a focus on health care data management, clinical coding and information governance, the HIM program combines foundational knowledge with practical, real-world experience. The curriculum includes preparation for nationally recognized certifications, including the Registered Health Information Technician, Certified Coding Associate and Certified Coding Specialist. 

Students will also complete a practicum experience and have access to built-in pathways for earning stackable credentials such as medical scribe and coding certificates, positioning them for immediate employment in a variety of health care settings.

“This program was developed with a clear purpose: to prepare students for the future of health care,” said Sara Michaliszyn, dean of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services. “We’re combining flexible online learning with certification preparation, applied learning and career-aligned pathways. It’s a comprehensive approach to supporting the next generation of health information professionals.”

The HIM associate degree aligns with national workforce trends that emphasize the role of accurate data, patient information security and technology in delivering effective health care. As the health care industry continues to evolve, demand is growing for qualified professionals who can manage digital records, ensure compliance and support efficient clinical operations.

Graduates can pursue roles such as health information technician, medical records analyst, coding specialist, release of information coordinator and electronic health records support specialist in hospitals, physician offices, insurance companies and public health organizations.
