In 2025, Youngstown State University continued to build on the momentum of recent years, advancing student success, strengthening its regional impact and navigating a higher-education landscape shaped by both opportunity and complexity.

With a sustained focus on student experience, academic excellence, workforce relevance and community partnership, YSU reinforced its role as THE anchor university for northeastern Ohio while laying critical groundwork for future growth.

In 2025, the university remained focused on strengthening academic pathways and support systems that help students persist and succeed. Continued investments in advising, retention strategies and student services ensured that access to education was matched by meaningful support throughout the student journey.

YSU also achieved a significant milestone by posting its second consecutive year of enrollment growth, defying national higher-education trends. Total student headcount increased by 2.1%, marking the first back-to-back annual enrollment gains in more than a decade and building on the university’s record-setting surge in Fall 2024. Together with record-setting degree completion across the 2024–2025 academic year, these trends underscore growing confidence in YSU’s affordability, academic quality and student-centered approach.

One of the most consequential developments of the year occurred in November, when the YSU Board of Trustees authorized the acceptance of property in Steubenville to support the university’s long-term educational presence in the Upper Ohio Valley.

A foundational step toward establishing a new physical location in Steubenville for Youngstown State University, acceptance of the property allowed the university to move forward with strategic planning related to facilities, program delivery, and student services. While academic programming is scheduled to begin in fall 2026 at the location, the decision underscores YSU’s commitment to providing stability and expanded educational opportunities for the region through a responsible, long-term approach.

2025 also marked a visible and transformative moment with the launch of two major development projects. The Kilcawley Center renovation launched in May 2025 reflects YSU’s belief that modern, inviting gathering spaces are essential to fostering engagement, connection and belonging. Fundraising for the “Kilcawley: Centered on the Future” campaign is continuing through 2026, buoyed by strong alumni and community support. In collaboration with the state of Ohio, Norfolk Southern Railroad and the village of East Palestine, YSU began the planning phase for a Fire Science Public Safety Center of Excellence facility in East Palestine.

YSU’s role as a cultural and community leader was also on display with the return of the Summer Festival of the Arts to the YSU campus. The event brought thousands to YSU, celebrating creativity and reinforcing the university as a welcoming gathering place where art, culture and community connect.

As Youngstown State University enters 2026, its path forward is clear.

YSU is positioned for continued momentum, and the university remains committed to innovation and student success. Construction on Kilcawley Center is progressing toward a modern, reimagined hub for campus life. Planning efforts for YSU Steubenville continue, with a focus on creating high-quality, career-aligned academic pathways that respond to regional workforce needs. And a renewed partnership with YLive will see the summer concert series return to Stambaugh Stadium on July 10 and 11.

Through purposeful investment, regional engagement and an unwavering commitment to its students and communities, YSU continues to build a strong, sustainable future – driven by academic excellence, student success, workforce relevance and community partnership.
