YWCA Mahoning Valley to Break Ground on $850K Project
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – YWCA Mahoning Valley will break ground on a $850,000 housing project on Jan. 22.
The development of the property at 3 Illinois Ave. is in response to a need for affordable housing in the community, said Leah Merritt, president and CEO of YWCA Mahoning Valley.
“Housing is one of our major program areas at YWCA. Attaining this property was an opportunity for growth in this area as there are many people seeking stable and affordable homes,” Merritt said.
The building will be updated to a modern and energy-efficient facility with affordable rent, a news release states. Six units, including one ADA unit, with a 12 to 24 bed capacity will be available for moderate-income students, families and working professionals.
The architect for the project is A. Neider Architecture LLC, and the contractor is B&B Contractors and Developers Inc.
Funding for the project was made available by the Mahoning County commissioners. Additional funds came from MacKenzie Scott, Edward M. Barr Charitable Foundation, The Ward Beecher Charitable Foundation, John F. Hynes and Loretta A. Hynes Charitable Foundation and John S. and Doris M. Andrews Memorial Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.
Fundraising efforts for the renovation project are ongoing.
