Community Foundation Promotes ‘Giving Tuesday’
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Civic, business and institutional leaders are joining with the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and WFMJ-TV to encourage charitable giving on “Giving Tuesday.”
“Giving Tuesday,” which takes place Dec. 1, is a national movement to encourage philanthropy after Thanksgiving Day, “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday.” A series of public service announcements organized by the Community Foundation and developed by WFMJ spotlights appeals by the local leaders to support local causes.
“The purpose of Giving Tuesday is to give to causes or organizations you love,” Shari Harrell, president of the Community Foundation, said. “We’re not promoting any single organization but we’re ardently advancing the joy and fulfillment that charitable giving can bring. If you can’t donate money at this time, we hope you can find a way to donate your time and talent. There are many, many excellent organizations and causes that can use them.”
Along with Harrell, spokesmen for the campaign include Youngstown Mayor John McNally; Warren Mayor Doug Franklin; Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel; Gordon Wean, chairman of the Raymond John Wean Foundation; philanthropists Bruce and Nancy Beeghly; and John Taylor and his daughter, Shelley Taylor Odille, owners of Paige & Byrnes Insurance in Warren.
