Five Permits Issued in Ohio’s Utica

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Five new horizontal well permits were issued to three exploration companies in Ohio’s Utica shale during the week ended June 4, while the rig count stood at 11 for the period, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Two permits were issued to Chesapeake Energy Exploration LLC for wells in Jefferson County, while two others were awarded to Statoil USA Onshore Properties Inc. for wells in Monroe County, ODNR reported.

A single well permit was issued to Ascent Resources Utica LLC for a well in Belmont County.

All of the permits were approved for wells in the southern tier of the Utica oil and gas play, where wells have proven to be more productive than those in the northern tier, such as Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

To date, there have been 2,182 permits issued in Ohio’s Utica, of which 1,748 are drilled. Of that number, 1,325 are in production.

There were no new Utica permits issued for the western Pennsylvania counties of Lawrence and Mercer, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
