New Drilling Permits Drop to 4 in Ohio’s Utica

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued just four permits for new horizontal wells during the week ended June 20, the agency reported.

According to the agency’s weekly activity update of oil and gas exploration in Ohio’s Utica shale, two permits were issued to Chesapeake Energy Corp. for new wells in Carroll County. Another well in Carroll County was permitted for Rex Energy Corp. subsidiary R.E. Gas Development LLC.

ODNR issued a fourth permit to American Energy Utica LLC for a well in Harrison County.

No new wells were permitted last week for sites in Trumbull, Mahoning or Columbiana counties.

To date, 1,512 horizontal wells have been drilled in the Ohio side of the Utica, 906 of which are producing. The rig count in the shale play inched up to 19 from 18 the previous week.

There were no new permits issued for Lawrence or Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania’s section of the Utica shale, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
