ODNR Awards Seven Permits in Utica

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued seven permits in the Utica shale for the week ended Sept. 10, all of them on the southern portion of the play.

Rice Drilling LLC and XTO Energy Inc. received two permits each to drill horizontal wells in Belmont County, according the latest update from ODNR.

Gulfport Energy Corp. also received two permits to drill in Monroe County, while Chesapeake Energy was awarded a single permit for a well in Jefferson County, ODNR said. No new permits were issued in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties.

There were no new permits issued in neighboring Lawrence or Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania’s portion of the Utica, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

As of Sept. 10, ODNR has issued 2,240 permits, of which 1,790 are drilled and 1,397 are in production.

There were 16 rigs operating in Ohio’s Utica during the week, one less than the previous week, according to ODNR.
