ODNR Issues Eight Permits in Utica Shale

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources awarded eight permits to three energy companies drilling for oil and gas in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale region last week.

CNX Gas Co., a division of Consol Energy, received four permits for horizontal wells and Antero Resources received two permits for wells in Monroe County, while Ascent Resources received two permits for wells in Belmont County for the week ended Feb. 12, ODNR said.

ODNR reported 20 rigs were operating in the Utica that week, down from 21 the previous week.

As of Feb. 11, there are 2,381 permits for horizontal wells issued in the Utica. Of that number, 1,899 are drilled and 1,486 are in production, ODNR reported.

No new permits were issued for Mahoning, Columbiana or Trumbull counties in the northern section of the Utica. Nor were there new permits issued for wells in nearby Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
