YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Resources reports that 16 oil and gas rigs were in operation in the Utica shale during the week ended July 23, up from 12 the previous week.

ODNR issued seven permits for new horizontal wells during the week, all in the central or southern portion of the Utica.

R.E. Gas Development LLC, a subsidiary of Rex Energy Corp., secured three permits to drill new wells in Carroll County, while Eclipse Resources received two permits for wells in Monroe County. Both Chesapeake Exploration LLC and Ascent Resources Utica LLC received single permits to drill wells in Jefferson and Belmont counties respectively.

To date, 2,201 permits for horizontal wells have been issued in Ohio’s Utica. Of that number 1,763 have been drilled and 1,347 are in production, ODNR reports.

No new well permits were issued for Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties.

Hilcorp Energy Co., the most active driller in the northern tier of the Utica, secured one permit July 19 for a new well in Lawrence County in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The Hilcorp well is permitted for the Kinkela pad in Pulaski Township, the DEP says. No permits were issued during the week for neighboring Mercer County.
