3 New Members Named to YSU Board of Trustees

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University has added three new members to its Board of Trustees: Joseph Kerola, president and CEO of PI&I Motor Express in Hubbard; Helen K. Lafferty, a two-time YSU alum; and sophomore biology major Galena Lopuchovsky.

Kerola replaces Dave Diebel on the board and will serve a nine-year term. A third-generation executive in the transportation industry, he has lead PI&I since 1996. Previously with the company, Kerala worked as director of operations, sales, insurance negotiations and purchasing, director of central dispatch, truck driver, tow motor operator and general grounds maintenance. He also helped start a CDL program with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections to held reintegrate convicts to the workforce. His work with the military also led to PI&I being selected to participate in a federal pilot program to help service members get certified for interstate commerce.

Lafferty was named the national/global trustee for a three-year term. A native of Youngstown, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree from You and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Her post-doctoral work has taken her to Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania and National University of Ireland-Galway. She is currently a professor of education and counseling at Villanova  University.

Lopuchovsky is serving as the university’s student trustee. Currently enrolled in the BaccMed program at YSU, she works as a student office assistant in the Office of the President. She is also a a trustee for the Honors College, vice president of finance and administration for the Panhellenic Council, vice president of Order of Omega and president of the Squirrel Watching Club. Lopuchovsky previously received the 2020 Outstanding Panhellenic New Member of the Year Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Award for volunteering more than 250 hours in one year.
