Coronavirus Case Update: Oct. 9, 2020
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Health reports 1,840 new cases of COVID-19 since Thursday to bring the cumulative number of cases in the state to 166,102, as well as 4,994 total deaths – up 11 since Thursday. The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports 169,308 total cases – up 1,380 from Monday – and 8,308 deaths, up nine.
In Mahoning County, the ODH reports 3,341 cases – up 25 from Thursday – with 523 hospitalizations and 282 deaths. Mahoning County Public Health reports 3,332 cases.
The ODH reports 2,063 cases in Trumbull County – up 26 from Thursday – with 354 hospitalizations and 133 deaths. In Columbiana County, the ODH reports 2,006 positive cases – three new cases – along with 226 hospitalizations and 86 deaths.
Mahoning and Trumbull counties both were upgraded on Thursday to Red in the state’s color-coded Public Health Advisory System, indicating very high exposure and spread. Columbiana County has an Orange rating, indicating increased exposure and spread.
Of the total cases reported by ODH, 154,480 are confirmed. ODH reported 9,622 probable cases based on the CDC’s expanded case definition. There have been 16,301 hospitalizations and 3,413 intensive care admissions, as well as 4,994 total deaths, which breaks down to 4,686 confirmed deaths and another 308 probable deaths under the CDC expanded diagnosis definition. The 21-day reported case average is 1,119, up 39 from yesterday.
The state reports a presumed 141,642 Ohioans have recovered after testing positive. Presumed recovered is defined as cases with a symptom onset date of greater than 21 days prior who are not deceased, according to the ODH website.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports 169,308 total cases, with 734 people hospitalized with 92 on ventilators. The commonwealth reports 8,308 COVID-related deaths thus far. Of the cases reported, 163,231 are confirmed.
Of all tests conducted in Pennsylvania, 1,999,765 were reported negative. With positive cases, 81% have recovered (If a case has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of their first positive test or onset of symptoms, then the person is considered recovered, according to the health department’s website).
Mercer County has 802 total cases – up five from Tuesday – and 24 deaths with 12,563 negative tests, while Lawrence County has 602 total cases – nine new cases – and 23 deaths, as well as 8,173 negative tests.
