Ohio Again Approaches 5,000 New COVID-19 Cases
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Health reports 4,961 new cases of COVID-19 in the state since Wednesday, bringing the total since the pandemic started to 235,170. It is the third consecutive day the number of new cases has surpassed 4,000.
The state also reported 20,015 total hospitalizations – up 214 from Wednesday – with 3,969 of those being admissions to intensive care. The current 21-day reported hospitalization average is 152. The Ohio Department of Health also reports 5,461 deaths, up 33 from Wednesday.
In Pennsylvania, the state’s Department of Health reports 220,566 cases of COVID-19, up 2,900 from Wednesday, along with 1,599 current hospitalizations and 8,937 deaths.
In Mahoning County, the ODH reports 4,401 cases – up 82 since Wednesday – with 588 hospitalizations and 287 deaths. The ODH reports 2,764 cases in Trumbull County, up 61, with 413 hospitalizations and 138 deaths. In Columbiana County, the ODH reports 2,379 positive cases, up 43, along with 249 hospitalizations and 88 deaths.
Mahoning and Trumbull counties are rated Red in the state’s color-coded Public Health Advisory System, indicating very high exposure and spread. Columbiana County has an Orange rating, indicating increased exposure and spread.
Only two counties remain at the Yellow level: Morgan and Monroe in southeastern Ohio.
Of the total cases reported by ODH, 221,881 are confirmed. ODH reported 13,289 probable cases based on the CDC’s expanded case definition. The state also reports 5,461 total deaths, which breaks down to 5,133 confirmed deaths and another 328 probable deaths under the CDC expanded diagnosis definition. The 21-day reported case average for new cases is 2,825.
The ODH also reports 20,015 hospitalizations, of which 3,969 are intensive care admissions. The state reports a presumed 178,646 Ohioans have recovered after testing positive. Presumed recovered is defined as cases with a symptom onset date of greater than 21 days prior who are not deceased, according to the ODH website.

On Monday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 220,556 total cases, with 1,599 people hospitalized and 147 on ventilators. The commonwealth reported 8,937 COVID-related deaths. Of the cases reported, 209,348 are confirmed.
Of all tests conducted in Pennsylvania, 2,391,336 were reported negative. With positive cases, 75% have recovered (If a case has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of their first positive test or onset of symptoms, then the person is considered recovered, according to the health department’s website).
Mercer County has 1,264 cases and 28 deaths with 15,191 negative tests, while Lawrence County has 1,132 total cases and 40 deaths, as well as 9,887 negative tests.
