McNally Names Retired Dean to Academic Commission
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mayor John V. McNally today appointed retired educator Barbara Brothers to the Youngstown City Schools Academic Distress Commission.
Brothers, whose career in education spans 40 years, was a professor of English at Youngstown State University and served as dean of its College of Arts and Sciences.
“Dr. Brothers is a tireless advocate for public education and I am thrilled that she has accepted my invitation to represent the entire city, including our students, parents and teachers on the Academic Distress Commission,” McNally said in a prepared statement.
McNally advised the state superintendent of public instruction, Richard A. Ross, of his appointment in a letter dated today and emailed to news organizations.
The five-member commission was created by the Ohio Legislature through House Bill 70, which established the so-called Youngstown Plan. Three commission members are to be appointed by the sate superintendent and one by the city’s mayor. The fifth member, who must be a teacher, is to be appointed by the president of the Youngstown School Board. The commission will then select a chief executive officer who will have near total authority in operating the publicly funded school district.
