Youngstown Schools Closes Buildings, Halts Food Distribution

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Youngstown City School District CEO Justin Jennings announced Thursday all school buildings are ordered closed and weekly food distribution will be suspended for two weeks amid the state’s climbing coronavirus numbers.

Starting Nov. 13, all of the district’s buildings will be closed. Food distribution is also being halted for the weeks of Nov. 16 and Nov. 23, according to a release.

Remote instruction will continue, however, and the recently opened YouCare Clinics at East and Chaney high schools will remain open for staff and scholars by appointment, according to a release.

Appointments can be made at either clinic by calling 330 744 0221. To call the East High clinic directly, dial 330 740 4005 extension 6938, and call 330 744 8822 extension 6978 for the Chaney clinic.

“The most important thing is the health and safety of our scholars, staff, families and community,” Jennings said. “The virus is spreading at a record pace so I think it’s best at this point to shut everything down for two weeks. After that, we will reevaluate to see where things are and decide whether it’s safe to reopen. We all need to do our part to stop the spread of this deadly pandemic.”
