Area Unemployment Improves, Still Among Highest in State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The unemployment rate in Youngstown and Warren improved again in October, but are still among the highest in the state.

Youngstown’s unemployment rate was 9.7% in October, down from 15% in September, while Warren’s rate was 9.1%, down from 13.8%. The rates for both are up significantly from last year, when Youngstown posted an unemployment rate of 6.4% in October 2019 and Warren reported a rate of 6.6%.

Among Ohio cities, only two ranked higher than the two Mahoning Valley cities: Maple Heights at 10.4% and Euclid at 9.8%.

At the county level, both Mahoning and Trumbull counties, along with Cuyahoga and Jefferson counties, lead the state with rates of 6.6%.

Unemployment in Mahoning County improved in October from a rate of 10.2% in September, but still higher than the 5.2% rate it reported in October 2019.

Trumbull County’s rate also fell from 10.1% in September, but up from 5.5% reported a year ago.

Columbiana County posted the lowest unemployment rate among local counties at 5.6%, down from 8.9% in September and up from 4.5% in October 2019.

For the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area – which includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties, as well as Mercer County in Pennsylvania – the unemployment rate was 6.8% in October, down from 9.8% in September but still higher than the 5.3% level reported in October 2019.
