Youngstown Tied for Ohio’s Top Unemployment Rate

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – All major cities in Ohio have seen their unemployment rates fall below 10% for the first time since the pandemic began, but local cities remain near the top of the list.

Youngstown’s rate – 9.9% – was tied with Maple Heights for the highest in the state, while Warren posted a rate of 8.9%, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Both figures are down from their levels the month prior, when Youngstown reported an unemployment rate of 11% and Warren one of 10.1%, but up significantly from November 2019. Then, the rates were 6.4% for Youngstown and 6.9% for Warren.

At the county level, Mahoning and Trumbull counties both posted an unemployment rate of 6.8%, down from the 7.4% each reported in October. In November last year, Mahoning County’s rate was 5.3% and Trumbull County’s was 5.7%.

Columbiana County, meanwhile, reported 6% unemployment in November, down from 6.3% in October and up from 4.3% in November 2019.

For the entire Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties as well as Mercer County, Pa., the unemployment rate was 6.9% last month, down from 7.5% in October and up from the 5.4% reported in November last year.
