Abrahams Donate $50,000 for YSU Scholarships
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Martin and Nancy Abraham have donated $50,000 to Youngstown State University to establish scholarships in memory of their parents.
Martin Abraham is the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at YSU.
“We are pleased to be able to make this gift to honor our parents,” Abraham said. “The pursuit of education was always very important to our parents. These scholarships will help students to pursue their educational dreams and will allow the memories of our parents to live forever.”
The Herbert S. and Agnes T. Wallis Scholarship honors Nancy Abraham’s parents. Herbert Wallis, an electrician, served as the chief electrician’s mate aboard the U.S.S. Long Beach during World War II. After the war, he was employed with AT&T, where he remained until retiring in 1979. Agnes Wallis was a stay-at-home mother who raised a house full of children. The scholarship is for undergraduate students majoring in electrical engineering technology.
The Sam E. and Barbara Abraham Memorial Scholarship honors Martin Abraham’s parents. Sam Abraham was the first college graduate in his family, majoring in business. He worked for many years in the movie industry, eventually managing theaters on Broadway. He went back to school to learn the new field of computer programming and then spent 20 years as an IT administrator in the utility industry. Barbara Abraham was a long time legal secretary. The scholarship is for undergraduate students in the computer science or the information technology programs.
Martin Abraham became YSU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs in October 2014, after serving seven years as the founding dean of YSU’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. He previously spent 11 years at the University of Toledo, first as a professor of chemical and environmental engineering, then as associate dean of research and graduate studies in the College of Engineering and finally as dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
