Stem Academy To Open at MCCTC This Fall
CANFIELD, Ohio – An academy devoted specifically to science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM — is set to open at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2016-2017 academic year, according to MCCTC.
The Valley STEM+Me2 Academy, first announced in 2014, will begin accepting applications in February for ninth and 10th graders, according to MCCTC’s website. Students in Mahoning County and surrounding areas can apply through open enrollment.
Renovations have begun on 7,000 square-feet of lab and classroom space at MCCTC to accommodate the new academy. The space will include equipment such as personal Trio 3-D printer and a large volume 3-D printer. The lab will also include a 3-D scanner, an Epilog laser engraver, a Roland printer/cutter, flatbed printer, and a wide format printer/cutter.
The objective of the academy is to engage students to use STEM to solve problems through a hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum. This curriculum includes gaining firsthand knowledge with practicing scientists, engineers, and technical professionals at research or industrial sites.
Once students complete the STEM curriculum, they are able to return to their home schools to complete 11th and 12th grade, or continue their education at a technical school.
