YSU Readies for Upgrade Projects Across Campus
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University is set for another busy summer construction season this year, topped by the scheduled completion of the $11.5 million Excellence Training Center in July.
The center at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Commerce Street will have space for jobs training and working with entrepreneurs to commercialize their ideas. Partners in the project include Eastern Gateway Community College, America Makes, the Youngstown Business Incubator, Choffin Career Center, Youngstown City Schools and the career and technical centers for Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. One opened, partners involved with the center will include ExOne Co., the Department of Defense and the Air Force.
Elsewhere on campus, major projects include renovations at Fedor Hall – home of the Rich Center for Autism – including a new sprinkler system, flooring and roofing and Tod Hall, getting fresh paint and carpet. Both projects are funded by private gifts.
The Edmund J. Salata Complex, which houses YSU’s facilities, grounds, planning and construction, central receiving and mail room departments, will see updates to windows, restrooms, stairs and HVAC system.
Cushwa Hall’s physician therapy department will have continued work on restrooms, stairwells and other support areas, while Ward Beecher Science Hall will see renovations of its entryways, stairwells and HVAC system.
There will be stormwater upgrades around areas prone to flooding, including Melnick Hall and the Physical Plant Motor Pool. And Wick and Lincoln parking decks will see general maintenance and upgrades.
Around campus, there will also be repairs of concrete and brick walkways, drive entrances, retaining walls, accessibility ramps and exterior stairs and railings.
Looking ahead, projects in development for the 2021-22 academic year include Moser Hall renovations, utility distribution upgrades/expansion, building envelope renovations, elevator safety repairs/replacements, IT infrastructure upgrades, Lincoln Building renovations, Stambaugh Stadium classroom, Beeghly Center Physical Therapy and air quality upgrades related to COVID-19.
