GM Partners with Wabtec to Develop Ultium Batteries for Trains

PITTSBURGH – General Motors has partnered with Wabtec Corp. to develop Ultium batteries and hydrogen fuel systems for trains.

In a statement, the two companies said the partnership to develop batteries will “provide flexibility, efficiency, power and reliability needed for rail.

“By working with GM on Ultium battery and Hydrotec hydrogen fuel cell technologies, we can accelerate the rail industry’s path to decarbonization and pathway to zero-emission locomotives by leveraging these two important propulsion technologies,” said Rafael Santana, CEO and president of Wabtec, in a statement.

Ultium Cells LLC – a joint venture between GM and LG Chem – is currently building two plants, including one in Lordstown. On Monday, GM President Mark Reuss said the company would announce more battery factory sites this week.

Based in Pittsburgh, Wabtec serves the freight and transit rail industries with equipment, digital products and value-added services. The company is working to create a zero-emission rail system.
