YMCA to Outline Central Branch Renovation Project
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Business and community leaders are invited to attend a press briefing Wednesday at which leaders of the YMCA of Youngstown will unveil detailed plans for the $5 million renovation of the Central Branch downtown.
The event, which will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Central Y’s second floor community gym, will include remarks from the Youngstown Y’s CEO, Timothy Hilk, members of the leadership team and the board of trustees.
“For 100 years the Central YMCA on Champion Street has served the families of the greater Youngstown area. The Y is ready to move into its second century of fulfilling its mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all,” Hilk says.
The Central Branch, first constructed in 1914, has had several additions since. Its most recent renovation was in 1970.
Jim Tressel, president of Youngstown State University, and Tom Fleming, president of Aim Leasing Co., co-chairmen of the Y’s “Growing Together” capital campaign, will provide a campaign status report regarding the New Markets Tax Credits obtained to help fund the renovation project.
The bulk of the work will be on the structure’s interior, including dividing one of the main gyms, although exterior work will be involved as well, an architect from Strollo Architects told the city last week.
The city’s Design Review Committee approved the façade work for the building, which will include replacing masonry and installing new windows.
