Kasich Gets Dixville Notch Nod in Midnight Balloting

DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. – Ohio Gov. John Kasich notched a victory of sorts in today’s New Hampshire primary. The first voters in the nation’s first primary here named Kasich their choice to be the Republican nominee.

Of the nine voters who cast ballots in the midnight polling, three cast their ballots for Kasich over Donald Trump, who received two votes, according to CNN. The four remaining voters were cast for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who shut out former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nod.

The Ohio governor, who has focused on New Hampshire in his bid for the GOP nomination, “worked hard for the Dixville Notch vote and was one of the few candidates to make the long trek to New Hampshire’s North Country to campaign,” according to the statement from his campaign. He later called each of its voters to personally request their support.

“It is an honor to earn the support of people who celebrate democracy as faithfully and famously as the voters in Dixville Notch,” Kasich said. “New Hampshire rewards hard work and a positive campaign and that defines what our team has done here. We’re going to work hard until all the polls close to continue our success throughout New Hampshire and then take the campaign to South Carolina and beyond.”

Kasich has held more than 100 town halls in New Hampshire, and several of its newspapers, in addition to the Boston Globe and New York Times, have endorsed him for the nomination.

Multiple polls in recent weeks have shown Kasich placing second in the New Hampshire balloting behind Trump, the billionaire real estate developer and reality show host. An American Research Group poll released this morning shows Trump at 33%, followed by Kasich at 17% and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida at 14%.
