YSU Takes Second Place in Concrete Canoe Contest

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University took second place at the National Concrete Canoe Competition this year, its highest showing yet in the annual engineering contest.

The University of Florida scored first place, but YSU beat out notable schools such as UCLA, Virginia Tech, Drexel, New York University and the Colorado School of Mines for the second place finish. The University of Washington took third place, Tongji University was awarded fourth place, and UCLA scored a fifth place showing.

The national competition, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, requires teams to design and construct a seaworthy canoe made entirely of concrete.

YSU placed fifth in the competition in 2018.

The event was held virtually at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. YSU team members this year included seniors Jillian Penman, Taylor Greathouse, Brooke Valley and Emma Minamyer, and sophomore Jersey Gorby. It is the first all-female concrete canoe team at YSU.

Anwarul Islam, YSU professor of Civil Engineering, is the team’s faculty adviser.
