ODNR Awards Gulfport 8 Drilling Permits
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Oklahoma City-based Gulfport Energy Corp. was awarded eight new horizontal drilling permits in the Utica shale for wells in Belmont and Monroe counties last week, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Gulfport was the sole company to receive permits for the week ended March 5. It plans to drill six new wells in Belmont County and two new wells in Monroe County, according to ODNR.
Permit activity in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale has dried up since oil and gas prices hit rock bottom last year. To date, 2,140 well permits have been issued in the Utica, of which 1,693 are drilled and 1,240 are in production.
The rig count in Ohio’s portion of the Utica stood at 15 for the week ended March 5.
In western Pennsylvania’s portion of the Utica, Houston-based Hilcorp Energy Co. was issued a renewal permit for one of its wells in Pulaski Township in Lawrence County, which borders Mahoning and Columbiana counties in Ohio, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
And, in neighboring Mercer County, Pa., SWEPI LP, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, renewed a permit for a horizontal well in Perry Township at the Mills farm, according to DEP data.
