Smith Joins Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District this week announced the addition of Dr. Shane Smith as district technical educator.
Smith will provide resources and technical assistance on storm water and conservation education initiatives. This includes programs to prevent or reduce pollutant runoff from municipal operations, and encourage public involvement and volunteerism to improve water quality.
”Mahoning SWCD is extremely pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Smith,” says Kathleen Vrable-Bryan, district administrator. “Dr. Smith not only has an illustrious education career, but he also brings a diverse background with a unique set of skills that complement the work we do.”
Smith previously was a senior lecturer of STEM education and director of a graduate STEM teacher education program at Kean University in New Jersey. He has taught geology at universities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Smith earned a master of science degree in geology from New Mexico State University and a doctor of philosophy degree in geology from Washington State University.
The Mahoning County Soil & Water Conservation District advances best management practices for conserving land and water resources. Established in 1950, the district is staffed by a small team of environmental professionals who lead efforts in community and school outreach, agricultural project support, stormwater control, watershed protection, pond management and more.
The district is governed by a five-member volunteer board of supervisors.
