Boardman Students To Perform Field Study in Mill Creek Park

BOARDMAN, Ohio — Boardman Project STREAM will have its first all-day field trip to Mill Creek Park Friday, December 17.  Eighty 8th grade students from Boardman Glenwood Junior High School will spend the day hiking trails and helping the park’s naturalist in tree surveying, water quality assessments and monitoring an invasive species affecting hemlock trees in the park. 

Students will meet at Pioneer Pavilion that morning between 8:30 a.m. and 9a.m.  

Boardman teachers and educators from the Environmental Collaborative of Ohio will lead hikes to gather data on trees, plants and water quality.  Lunch will be served at Pioneer Pavilion and students will resume hikes in the afternoon to gather more data from 12:30-2pm. 

This is the first off-site field trip for Project STREAM, a program funded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The previous year’s trip was cancelled as a result of the state shutdown in March 2020 because of COVID. 

Glenwood teachers have been getting their students outside as much as possible in the outdoor courtyard classroom, the new outdoor classroom and also getting them out front in the natural area to practice gathering data and using the tools and technology needed for authentic scientific field study.

This field study has also been supported by a partnership with Mill Creek Park, and park naturalist Nick Derico.
