Plant Renovations Bring ‘All-Electric’ Goal Even Closer
DETROIT – General Motors is investing almost $154 Million in Western New York for renovations to its Western New York Lockport Components plant.
Lockport components was initially founded in 1910 as the Harrison Radiator Company for the purpose of designing, manufacturing and selling automotive radiators and other components. The renovation was announced Jan. 21, and new machinery and equipment will soon be installed for production of a key component in electric motors – the “stator module.”
GM says the electric motor stator module will be part of their journey to an “all-electric” future and will help power future Ultium Platform-based electric SUV and truck products such as radiators, condensers and heat cores.
An additional 230 positions are predicted to be created between 2023 and 2026, following the renovation. As construction preparation is on its way, the facility is said to be continuing production of truck and SUV components.
GM executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability, Gerald Johnson, said the renovations “reaffirm” their commitment to manufacturing at the plant and their faith in their team.
“They will build a crucial module in our electric motor assembly for our future electric trucks and SUVs,” he said. “This is an excellent example of how we are brining our workforce along on the journey to an all-electric future while we scale our EV production capacity and maintain a flow of parts for our current vehicles.”
