The Update | Cut-out Poetry Collage Workshop Set; Tressel to Narrate ‘Peter and Wolf’

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The McDonough Museum of Art at Youngstown State University will offer a cut-out poetry and collage workshop for teens and adults from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 7.

The event is free and open to the public, and supplies will be provided. Registration is required by May 1; send an email to [email protected]. The class is limited to 25 participants. 

Michael Nyers of Fade into A Blackout – Blackout Poetry will lead this workshop for teens and adults. Participants will create a cut-out poetry and collage piece using magazine images and text from books.

Nyers is a poet, mixed media artist, and author whose passion is blackout poetry — a mixture of poetry and art made by taking printed text and blacking out words to create a poem or statement — which he sees as a look into the subconscious mind that can promote mindfulness and creativity, benefiting overall well-being and mental health.

Photos will be taken of collages made on this day for posting on the museum’s social media pages in honor of World Collage Day, an international celebration of the fine art of collage on May 14.

Tressel to Narrate Children’s Concert

 YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Jim Tressel, president of Youngstown State University, will narrate a children’s concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Stambaugh Auditorium, that will include a performance of Prokofiev’s “Peter & the Wolf” and Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals.”

Tickets are $8 for general admission seating ($7 for senior citizens, free for children under 12) and can be purchased at the door on at stambaughauditorium.com.

 “Carnival of the Animals” introduces a zoo of creatures large and small, while “Peter & The Wolf” tells the tale of a young boy’s adventures with a bird, a cat, a duck and a wolf.

YSU Student History Projects on Display

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An exhibition of projects by students in Youngstown State University’s applied history program will go on display Thursday, April 28, on the fifth floor of Maag Library.

An opening reception will begin at 3 p.m. that day.

On May 6, the students will discuss their work at 3 p.m. at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor on Wood Street. Both events are free to the public.

The students, under the directorship of Professor Tom Leary, created projects with a goal of conveying history while contributing to the present and futureAn exhibit about Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom, Youngstown’s oldest Jewish synagogue.

The projects include: 

• An interactive digital exhibit, “The Mackey Map,” which represents the east end of downtown Youngstown. The extent is defined by a recently discovered 1899 surveyor’s drawing.
• An interactive map and exhibit for the Mahoning Movement, a history and advocacy project of transportation in the area.
• A preview of the steel museum’s 30th anniversary digital exhibit.
• A digital exhibit and interactive map titled Early Architecture of the Western Reserve & Nearby Places, documenting and analyzing surviving structures from the early 1800s.

Bark in the Park at Firestone Park

COLUMBIANA, Ohio – Bark in the Park will take place Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Firestone Park. The event will feature vendors, pet adoptions, demonstrations and giveaways. It will be located near the walking trail behind the baseball field.

Purse Raffles at Mr. Anthony’s Event

BOARDMAN, Ohio – Bags and Baubles, a fundraiser for the Mahoning County Juvenile Court, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at Mr. Anthony’s. 

Reserved tables of eight are $360, and individual tickets are $45 per person. Purse sponsorships are $450 and include a table for eight. Admission includes a dinner buffet and dessert. A full cash bar will be available.

This year’s grand prize is a Chanel purse valued at $5,000; only 350 tickets will be sold. The event will feature designer purses, a mystery purse raffle and other items.
