Kids to Learn About Community Pollinators This Weekend
SALEM, Ohio — Kids can learn all about bees, butterflies and buds and how to do their part in supporting community pollinators this weekend.
It’s All About Bees, Butterflies, Buds and Flowers will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the garden of the Smucker House at 271 S. Broadway Ave. in Salem.
As the name suggests, children of all ages can come and learn all about bees, butterflies, buds and flowers. Head Beekeeper Susan Emerson Nutter, of Bees and Trees in Lisbon, will talk about her work as a beekeeper. She’ll be available to talk about the honey cycle and the importance of supporting pollinators in the community.
Participants will paint flowerpots and plant marigolds to take home, make and take pollinator seed bombs, and make and take an up-cycled butterfly craft. They can also take part in planting the sunflower garden at the Smucker House. Snack bags will be distributed.
Kids can meet Bernie the Puppy and hear a reading of “Bernie” by author Sally Kurjan from 10 a.m. to noon. Books from her popular series will be available for sale and signing.
The event is sponsored by Salem Federation of Women’s Clubs; Ohio State University Extension with 4-H Youth Development Program and Master Gardener Program; The Brightside Project; Salem First Presbyterian Preschool; Bees and Trees; Salem City Parks and Recreation; BeeCity USA- Salem; Burchfield Homestead Society and author Sally Kurjan.
