City Approves Engineering Contract for EV Charging Stations

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Board of Control approved a contract Thursday morning with Jaminet Engineering, Youngstown, to help develop electric vehicle charging stations at two sites.

Under the $12,250 contract, Jaminet will provide engineering services and prepare bid documents related to electrical engineering design for the installation of two Level2 EV charging stations at city-owned parking lots at 111 W. Federal St. and the northwest corner of Federal Street and Fifth Avenue.

Funds are available from auto license fees, according to board of control documents.

Work is expected to begin in the fall on the two charging station sites with completion expected in the spring, Charles Shasho, deputy director of public works, said. The EV chargers will be able to charge up to eight vehicles total, he said.

The city-owned chargers will join a handful of charging stations in Youngstown. The U.S. Department of Energy’s online Alternative Fuels Data Center shows three level 2 charging stations at Western Reserve Transit Authority’s 604 Mahoning Ave. garage and a charging station in the doctor’s parking area at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

In addition to those, the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County installed a pair of non-Tesla charging stations at Main Library as part of its recent $27 million renovation.

“We have seen a few folks using them,” Maggie Henderson, PLYMC’s strategic communications officer, said.

The board also approved paying $12,818.79 for 718 hours of accumulated sick time as severance to T. Sharon Woodberry, who stepped down earlier this year as the city’s economic development director.

Woodberry, an East High School graduate who earned her baccalaureate in public administration from Eastern Michigan University, was hired as a secretary in the city’s economic development department in 1998. After the city created the position of development officer for her two years later, she was named deputy director of the office and eventually rose to director in 2007.

In 2014, then-Mayor John McNally named Woodberry as director of the newly created department of community planning and economic development, which was created from the merger of three existing departments.

In 2019, Brown reorganized the department, naming Posterli director and Woodberry economic development director.

Additionally, the board approved a $2,000 grant to Full Faith Moving Services LLC from the city’s COVID-19 microenterprise grant program.
