WYSU Director Runs 89 Miles to Support Station
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – WYSU-FM director of broadcasting Gary Sexton ran 89 miles in less than 23 hours Friday to support the station.
Sexton took part in the One Day at the Fair 24-Hour Race in New Jersey. WYSU listeners sponsored him with proceeds going to the WYSU Strive and Thrive Donor Drive. Sexton had made it his goal to run 88.5 miles – the number represents WYSU’s location on the FM dial – in the race.
“My primary intention for this run was to do something so ridiculously hard to encourage our listeners to do something ridiculously easy, and that is to support this 53-year-old community treasure,” he said.
October is Support WYSU Month. The non-commercial public radio station based at Youngstown State University is seeking contributions with a goal to hear from 800 donors by the end of the month.
Sponsoring Sexton’s run was one way listeners could contribute.
Before the Oct. 7 race, more than 100 listeners had sponsored Sexton’s run, generating over $20,000. The station hopes more contributions will follow in celebration of the race, according to a press release.
