Couple Makes Second $1 Million Donation to University Within Two Years

YOUNGSTOWN – Michael and Suellen Weir have donated $1 million to the Youngstown State University Williamson College of Business Administration.

The atrium of Williamson Hall will in turn be named in honor of the Weirs, according to a press release from YSU.

“We cannot acknowledge enough Suellen’s and Mike’s generosity and their long-standing commitment to YSU,” said Jim Tressel, YSU president. “It is because of folks like the Weirs that YSU is the strong, impactful institution that it is today.”

The couple donated another $1 million two years ago, establishing the Suellen and Michael Weir Scholarship for engineering and science majors.

The Weirs are YSU alumni who met during their time at the university. Suellen, a Cardinal Mooney High School graduate, received her bachelor’s degree in education in 1973, and Michael, a North Lima High School graduate, received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1971 and a master’s in business administration in 1977.

Michael went on to work for Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Babcock and Wilcox, and Ingersoll-Rand. By 1982, he founded Total Equipment Company, a pump and air compressor supplier for Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

“As with most disciplines, advances in technology have greatly influenced how the world does work,” said Kelly Wilkinson, WCBA dean. “This gift will help further enhance our technology and better prepare our students for career success by using technology in innovative ways to improve learning.”
