Hubbard Student Organizes Charity Basketball Game to Benefit Potential Development

HUBBARD, Ohio – Isabella Williams, a sophomore at Hubbard High School, is giving an assist to Potential Development, a Youngstown school for students with autism.

Williams organized the Shoot for a Change basketball game to benefit the school. The event, which will include a basket raffle, 50/50 raffle and concession and T-shirt sales, will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hubbard High School, 350 Hall Ave. SE. The game will feature student-athletes from Hubbard and Potential Development high schools.

Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $7 for adults and $4 for children. All proceeds will benefit Potential Development.

Williams designed the event to fulfill the project requirements for her Community and Career Exploration class. She was inspired by her cousin, Christoph Rhoads, who is a student at Potential Development.

“This event is really special to me because Potential Development does a lot for my cousin,” Williams said. “Giving back to them is very exciting. PD encourages kids with autism to play sports, have school dances and participate in clubs. They also work with the students to achieve their high school diplomas. It’s a wonderful school to ensure students with autism receive individual education to meet their needs and prepare them for the future.”

Hubbard High School cheerleaders and the Potential Development Pep Club will also participate in the event.

“This charity basketball game is a great opportunity for our students to show the community how much they enjoy extracurricular activities such as athletics and pep club,” said Paul Garchar, CEO of Potential Development. “It’s important for students to receive a well-rounded experience of academics, sports, music and the arts.
