Boardman Principal Awarded for Science Education Leadership
BOARDMAN, Ohio – The Science Education Council of Ohio awarded Boardman school principal Bart Smith with its administrator award for leadership in science education Jan. 30 at the council’s statewide symposium in Columbus.
This award is given to a school administrator who promotes and supports quality science education within their school, staff and community.
Glenwood science teacher Eric Diefenderfer nominated Smith. He credited Smith’s support for many of the science opportunities now at Glenwood Junior High School – including the most recent addition, a grant-funded recycled garden in the school courtyard.
“Whether it’s encouraging us to write grants, or supporting our ideas for outdoor classrooms, habitat gardens,or hydroponic growing, principal Smith has been open to teachers’ ideas and requests,” says Diefenderfer. “Sometimes it’s finding the funds. And sometimes it’s doing the dirty work yourself, and building what we need so that our students have these opportunities for hands-on learning.”
Diefenderfer was also recognized at the awards ceremony as a grant winner. He received a $325 grant from the council for a water quality project for his 7th grade science classes.
