Sponsors Sought to Print Illustration of Idora Carousel
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local artist Bob Barko Jr. has completed his final piece highlighting Idora Park and is searching for sponsors for its printing. The deadline for sponsorship is June 20.
The computer-enhanced pencil-and-ink illustration, titled “Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel No. 61,” features the iconic Idora Park carousel that was at the park from 1922 to 1984.
The 16”-by-20” print is ready to go to press, Barko said in a release. He is looking for 20 sponsors to donate $100 each. Up to 10 sponsors will receive one of the 50 artist’s proofs with their name listed on the certificate accompanying each proof. Proofs 10 through 16 and 18 through 50 are available on a first come, first served basis.
After being removed from Idora Park, the carousel was moved to Brooklyn and restored by Jane and David Walentas. It’s now one of the main attractions at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Barko’s illustration, which took more than 60 hours to complete, is based off the restored and operational model.
“I’ve wanted to see the carousel in person ever since it was unveiled in 2006,” Barko said. “Once we got there, it was like saying ‘Hello’ to an old friend. I closed my eyes and for a moment, I was on the midway at Idora with the sights, sounds, smells and memories flooding back to me.”
In addition to the artist’s proofs, which will be sold for $50 each, 750 prints will also be made and sold for $20.
Those interested in a sponsorship can contact Barko at 330 881 5819 or [email protected].
